Tuesday, June 15th 2004:

From Vitsand we headed south to Övre Fryken, where we payed a visit to the birth place of Selma Lagerlöf. The author of "Nils Holgersson" adorns - just like our little heroe on his goose - the Swedish 20 crowns bill.
Along Lake Fryken and later heading westwards we arrived in Arvika, the gate to Glaskogen, a big nature reserve (many moose!!!) at the lakes Övre and Stora Gla. Here we wanted to rent a canoe or go for a hike and - of course - watch moose. But we did not consider murphy´s law...
The weather had upset our plans, and the forecast for the next days was even worse. That not being all bad enough we had arrived exactly 1(!) day too soon. On June 16th the season opens in Glaskogen and it seemed to be very difficult - if not impossible - to get some accommodation in the early part of the season. So after a short lunch break and a little walk we continued our way. Disappointed...

Glaskogen

Later the troubles in Glaskogen proved to be a hint of fortune because in Vammerviken at Västra Silen we found a perfectly situated campsite, where we rented a grass covered cabin for the next 2 days. A wonderful double rainbow welcomed us.

The view from our cabin

Very cosy!!

At the reception a picture of moose attracted our attention. The very nice lady there told us enthusiastically that they had lots of moose in that region. She grabbed a map and marked the spots where it was most likely to see moose. So we knew what to do that evening... ;-)

Around 9 p.m. we started again, and we were to be lucky again: in the middle of a flower covered meadow there she stood - this time it was a cow. For minutes she did not bother about us so we could watch her quietly through the binoculars.

After the pleasing end of that day we planned - according to the weather - to do some canoeing or go for a little hike along the lake tomorrow. =>
